The best pizza in Helsinki

As an Italian, one of the questions I’m most frequently asked is “where to get a good pizza in Helsinki”. Well, the answer is in the picture above: go get yourself a Dr. Oetker Casa di Mama frozen pizza, and you will have a better pizza than in any restaurant around town. Honest.

If you really, really insist on going out for pizza, then the closest to Italian standards I have found is in “La Vista” in Kamppi, although the quality seems to vary from one time to the next. And you’ll still be better off with Dr. Oetker.

Another option is to make it yourself, but that’s the subject for another post…

I agree that German frozen pizza has it’s virtues and Dr. Oetker is one of the best brands one can get in Finland. Although I do like the normal ones better than the Casa di Mama.

But on the other hand I don’t really see what’s wrong with pizza of Rivoletto, Il Duetto or Benjam’s Bistro (or maybe half dozen other places). I have not eaten at La Vista, but will try.

yeah, maybe I should have formulated my post differently. Italians are very particular about pizza, and my point is that you are not going to get anything that conforms to the italian standards – which incidentally are just a matter of habit and you may even not like. There are a lot of restaurants serving good food under the name of pizza, it’s just that it’s not what I would like to get.

and let me also add that finding a good pizza abroad for an Italian is the same as finding a good sauna for a finn :)

I think that most “pizza” in Finland is quite horrible, but I agree that counting out the low price places one can get quite decent food under the name too.

At least at Il Duetto and Benjam’s Bistro the cooks are Italian and at least to me the pizza feels quite authentic, give them a chance if you have not tried them before. (In both restaurants the quality varies quite a lot)

Given the regional differences it seems it is not that easy in different parts of Italy either, I have witnessed a heated debate about how pizza should be between a guy from Naples an other from Rome. :)

To tell you the truth, I’m not that particular about saunas.

I found only now these pages (’cause you know, where you read Internet, you should spell Serendipity) and I’d like to leave my take on best pizza in Finland: after long search, I’m currently quite satisfied with Pirkka kiviuunipizza (which comes in three flavours). It’s cheaper than Dr. Oetker and it’s even made in Italy! :)

Thanks, I will give it a try!
