Posting with MaemoWordPy on N810

May 19th, 2008

I’m writing this post using MaemoWordPy, a blog client for Maemo/Nokia Internet Tablet that seems to work nicely enough. The photo below is one of the stock images that came with the N810, as I couldn’t find a decent subject to shoot with the built-in camera.

Have you ever wanted to be an astronaut?

May 18th, 2008

AstronautProbably everybody has thought about being an astronaut at some point in their life (at least I did). Well, it seems that now is your chance:  the European Space Agency is recruiting for “future manned missions to the ISS, the Moon and beyond”. And best of all, “too many over developed muscles may be a disadvantage for astronauts in weightlessness”! At least now I have an official excuse for not exercising.

New toy, old passion

May 14th, 2008

Today I received the toy my work is going to be centered around starting from this month. If you don’t know what it is, have a look here. What the link doesn’t say however is that this “full web 2.0 experience” is powered by Linux. My first experience with Linux dates back to 1994, but the earliest proof of it is this post from 1995. If you don’t know italian, in there I’m sheepishly asking how to configure the startup applications in the window manager (which I think was fvwm at the time).

Bike route to work

April 29th, 2008

I used the sports tracker again to record the route I take when I cycle to work. It’s not the shortest, but it’s along the sea and passes some of the nicest spots in Helsinki, most notably the Kaivopuisto park.

Update: showing the path recorded by Sports Tracker in Google Maps is very simple if you have access to a web file storage. Just upload the .KML file to a public location, and copy the URL in the “search” box in Google Maps.

So Delicious, so Mauritius

April 27th, 2008

It’s been more than a month since we returned from our two weeks holiday in Mauritius, and I finally found the time to go through the 3 Gb of photos we took back with us.

Balenet 3.0 goes live

April 26th, 2008

3.0This update has been sitting half-baked in my computer since last autumn, and finally I decided it was time to release it.

The biggest visible change is the new theme with black background, meant to enhance the color of the photos which are after all the main content of the site. Also, I decided to jump on the bandwagon and move to Flickr as the location for all my shared photos, mostly because it’s just the simplest way. The “moblog” is demoted to a mere post category, and finally I removed the guestbook because it had become a magnet for spam.

Under the hood, Balenet is now powered by WordPress 2.5, which seems to be the mainstream in terms of free weblog softwares. It was very easy to set up and import all the old posts, although I found the theme mechanism a little hard to master. I haven’t followed the evolution of Movable Type lately, but all in all I prefer WordPress so far.

For the editing I moved to Coda, a clever web editor for Mac OS X that helped me to (finally) learn CSS.

Hope you like it. I’m leaving the comments enabled for a while, at least until the spam starts to pick up.
